Races of Myterra

The vast majority of Myterra's population are of the human race. However, there are also demi-human races in far fewer numbers. These consist of elves, dwarves, and halfings.

Demi-humans are considered to have ancient ancestors in common with humans, and for the most part the four races live freely among one another. Some demi-humans prefer to settle among their own kind; elves in forest villages, dwarves in mountain caves, and halflings in small hamlets near rivers. However, even in these ethnic settlements, visits from humans or other demi-humans are usually welcome.

Demi-Humans

Elf Elves are an innately magical race, and the arcane comes naturally to them as a part of their ancestral lineage.

They are naturally inclined to woodlands, and it isn't uncommon to encounter a  village of elves when trekking through the forests of Myterra. Elves also have infravision, which helps them to track prey when hunting beneath the dark canopy of the trees.

Some communities of elves establish themselves around or near sacred forest sites that are protected by a powerful druid. In these communities, though the druid is human, the elves often look to them for guidance and leadership. When a human is "chosen by the forest", elven lore suggests that they have been called to do so by a higher power.

The primary deity of elves is Arborvestris, the First Tree, who it is said gave birth to all the forests of Myterra.

Dwarf Unlike elves, dwarves are adverse to magic; so much so that they have a natural resistance to the effects of the arcane. While they are not immune to magic, spells have noticeably less effect upon dwarves.

They are naturally inclined to deep caverns, and can actually see in the dark in addition to being gifted with infravision. Dwarves are expert miners as well as masters of metal-smithing. Communities of dwarves are often dedicated to mining, refining, and producing wares from specific precious metals and gemstones. In fact, cut gemstones and other treasure items crafted by dwarven hands are worth twice that of other treasures.

Ancient legend tells that dwarves once lived in great underground halls, however they no longer do so. Such vast concentrations of wealth and resources tend to draw the attention of powerful monsters or greedy bandits. Instead, dwarves often inhabit small communal dens hidden in mountain caverns near (or within) their mines.

The primary deity of dwarves is Ferroferrum, the Broken God, who it is said refuses to bestow divine blessings upon his followers, and instead taught them to master the craft of forging.

Halfling xxx

The primary deity of halflings is Y'tiffa (pronounced Tee-fa), the River Maiden. Though she is actually a demigod, Y'tiffa is said to be fond of halflings and provides blessings to their riverside communities.

Monster Races

Aside from the human and demi-human population, Myterra is host to several civilized and semi-civilized monster races. Examples of monster races that may form settlements are goblins, gnolls, gnomes, and kobolds.

Some monster races are always hostile to outsiders, while others may offer visitors a limited amount of trust. It's always best to ask around the local human or demi-human establishments to determine the disposition of nearby monster settlements!
