GM Note: The main goal with this adventure was to provide an opportunity for players to familiarize/re-familiarize themselves with the mechanics of BECMI D&D as well as earn a bit of additional treasure and equipment for the PCs to get a good head-start for the pending campaign.
While relaxing in the Raging Cocktrice Tavern the adventurers take note of a commotion outside. Fawn and Wilson Lawson are reporting their son, Tyler, missing. The city guard seems unconcerned since it has only been half a day, but the boy's mother is emphatic that something is wrong. The adventurers step-in and agree to investigate the matter for the parents. They visit the Lawson farm on the outskirts of the city where goblin tracks and signs of a struggle are found at Tyler's last known whereabouts.
Following the tracks into the forest, the adventurers discover a cave guarded by dire wolf-riding goblins and an ogre. Inside the cave they discover a goblin warren ruled by a magic-wielding goblin queen who is guarded by a contingent of ogre bodyguards.
Infiltration of the warren proves to be challenging, requiring the adventures to set camp twice to recover from encounters (once in the forest, and once in the cave).
Once the monsters are defeated the adventures discover a secret door leading to a crude treasure chamber guarded by a grey ooze. Inside they find a small hoard of wealth and a makeshift cage imprisoning the child they came to rescue.
A pile of child-sized humanoid remains are also found within the cave – freshly cooked and eaten, leaving only bones and tattered clothing. At first they believe this to be Tyler, but later discover (when the boy is rescued) that there was another child – a young girl – who was captured before him and who he witnessed the goblins kill, cook, and eat.
After freeing Tyler and collecting treasure, the adventures make their way back to Prymdale un-accosted, which is where the next game session will pick-up.
